These are the buttons from a WW2 RAF uniform, When you put them together they make a mini-compass, for use if you get shot down behind enemy lines

      Royal Air Force uniform buttons were ingeniously designed to conceal escape and evasion compasses to help downed airmen find their way if shot down over enemy territory;

      once two buttons were balanced -> two radioluminescent dots indicated north and a single dot indicated south; this design required a delicate touch to work!

      these secret survival aids were developed by the secret intelligence department MI9;

    2. I was in the Royal Dutch Air Force. They also teach you how to find North using an analog watch and things like what side of a tree the moss is growing During daytime. At night of course you can use the stars. We also got training using a military compass.

      In the Netherlands though it’s really hard to get lost! It’s such a small country that just the ability to walk in a straight line for 10 min. You would hit some form of civilisation.
