The duality of retail. Call a guy sir and he nods approvingly. Call a woman ma’am and she asks for your manager.

Jokes on me at my school you call the teachers miss and sir. So now it’s just my default for randoms I come across in the wild…
(Albeit I never know my teachers names so maybe that’s a plus)

Do people get upset at this? I’ve never seen anyone I call ma’am get upset for that.

Sir carries the feeling of respect at being called a gentleman
Ma’am does not have that fancy respect the way Madam might, but it also sounds like they might be old unlike “Miss”

And that’s why I use “madam” instead of “ma’am”.

I feel weird when people call me “boss.” Like, I guess there’s nothing wrong with acknowledging a power dynamic, but I don’t like the idea that I give off an energy that makes people would think that it would stroke my ego to have someone I’m temporarily in a position of power over e.g. a retail worker call me that.
