      I am not aware of any evidence that men demanded any of these contraptions from women. Men had plenty of stupid ideas of their own – the powdered wigs, the high hills – but these layered architectural masterpieces of skirts are fruits of women’s own genius.

      Hence the question.

      WHY?!

      What made women back then say “my life is too simple, I need a dress which would require a door to walk into”?
