The one I did was today about Joan of arc’s friend.

This is me. I’m not an big history guy, so I usually don’t know what is going on in the meme. I will usually learn just enough to understand the joke, then give an upvote and move on. If I recognize the meme, or already understand it, I usually just pass on by, unless it’s actually funny.

More often than not I hear some fascinating new things about a topic I was already familiar with, go read about it, learn OP vastly exaggerated the situation and come back and complain.
Then I invariably get the “it’s just a meme bro” response.

Yes, but unfortunately the knowledge never definitively stuck with me

Not a meme but a lot of people know about the Three Kingdoms era but know less about what happened afterward. Particularly War of the Eight Princes since there are barely any media coverage of that event.
So the amount of historical research about that time (as small as it was) appeared when Total War Eight Princes DLC revealed was nice to see.

the trick is to find a lesser known event within a wider known event. so like instead of another WWII meme about the *Bismarck* [make one about the time a German commerce raider and an Australian cruiser sank each other.](https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryMemes/s/k0etG0UYv3)
I’m not quite sure what meme format to use, hence why I haven’t done it. But it’s just so good. A former slave and civil war veteran, William West, arrests President Grant for speeding with his horse and buggy in DC.

This inspired me to post something very niche
Of course! That’s how I ended up with this: [Some men are just made for great things… (this shit is crazy lol) : r/HistoryMemes](https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryMemes/comments/1ijijk8/some_men_are_just_made_for_great_things_this_shit/), lmao.
