This practice in Japan is called “inemuri”.

    1. Ah yes, Japan. Famously the home of excellent work-life balance practices where employers are super-chill about their employees taking naps.

Their birthrate is well below replacement… If you’re working, you’re not fucking, not raising kids, and not ensuring the growth of your society…

Japan’s Fertility rate is 1.2 – Replacement fertility is 2.1.

      30% of Japan’s population is over 65.

They’re facing severe demographic collapse –

They’re going to need massive systemic changes if they’re going to recover.

    3. No don’t do this.

      Do your work.
      Go home.
      Rest.

There is no honor in turning your workplace into living quarters.

Listen I’ve worked in Japan for 14 years and if you nod off you’re gone (unless you’re in upper management). Everyone takes their naps in the toilet cubicles

    5. I feel like this is bs lol, every time I hear anything about the Japanese work culture it’s the complete opposite of a boss being chill with employees sleeping on the job.

      This is Kamin, not inemuri.

Inemuri is a term for dozing off, used in a negative context usually like Inemuri-unten (driving while half asleep) or sleeping in class.

Kamin is temporary sleep directly translated from the Kanji, and is basically what you’d call an adult naptime.

Wish we’d just be able to finish job hours in-time and just go home instead.

I know a few people working in corporate in Japan and nothing like this is happening in their companies, moreover they can’t even peacefully quit their job

    8. Idk man I feel like if there was a nap room at the office that I could clock out to for like 15min and cat nap, I might actually be more productive

    9. It’s not just in Japan. It’s common here in Asia esp in China and Taiwan where employees will nap after lunch.

    10. Lets not pretend Japan is the best country for employees now. Its literally just paid slavery for the most part. Their work-culture is insane.

We do this in Vietnam, too. I love my lunch nap. I tried skipping it, but I get a little psycho.

    12. I hate these half-truths. I work for a Japanese company. “Inemuri” just means “nap”, it’s only acceptable during lunch and it’s not frowned upon because it shows that you’re not getting enough rest because you work long hours and go to nomikai afterwards. It’s not good, just part of the outdated toxic work culture.

What about the practice of pissing sideways while walking on the sidewalk wearing a cowboy hat and waving a peaceful flag? Does that have a term in japan?

    14. The implications of even having to sleep at job aside. I shudder also in regards to security. Sleeping while the pc is not locked sonthat anyone could use your pc without you noticing (right sot monitor)

I wonder how far you could take it before it stops being “good work ethic” and turns into “squatting bum.” Like could I bring a fold out futon and hot plate and bathe in the restroom?

    16. And after 20 years of this style, the employee will be knocked out by trucks while they are going back home. And Goddess will show up to make them reincarnated in isekai.
