It’s a neat trick, how conservative anti-abortion women justify their own abortions yet feel that they’re qualified to abolish it for everyone else.

I was arguing with my boss during the 2020 election cycle, he was pro-trump and spouting off about how awful abortion is and people only use it for birth control. I let him dig himself a nice hole about it then asked, “do you remember three years ago when my wife and I lost a pregnancy?”
Him: yeah …
Me: the D&C procedure to remove the dead fetus is considered an abortion. My wife would’ve died if she wasn’t allowed to get the procedure.
I haven’t heard a peep about abortion from him since.

“Choose the mother” is exactly what the original Mosaic law and Messianic law both say to do. Jews then and now prioritise the mother’s life over the unborn. The original Jewish Christians followed suit.
When the Catholic Church first said no, life begins at conception and abortions are sinful, it was informed more by Roman misogyny and cultural views about abortions rather than scripture.
When the Protestants split from the Catholic Church and read the Bible for themselves, they rightly found nothing condemning abortions and went back to the original Jewish stance. American Protestants didn’t switch again until the 1980s, [and were manipulated into doing so by segregationists](https://billmoyers.com/2014/07/17/when-southern-baptists-were-pro-choice/).
So, if you truly want to vote conservative on the issue of abortion, you should vote to *protect* access to abortions, not ban it.
The only faiths that actually say anything in their scripture against abortion are Hindu and Zoroastrianism. The only other faith otherwise that interprets Biblical scripture to be against abortion is the Baha’i faith.

Read rhe essay *[The Only Moral Abortion is My Abortion](https://joycearthur.com/abortion/the-only-moral-abortion-is-my-abortion/)* for numerous examples of anti-choice women having abortions. And it’s not just to save their lives.

The reasons [abortion was banned in the US to begin with starting in 1864](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/the-complex-early-history-of-abortion-in-the-united-states) weren’t religious ones, but [racist](https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-the-fight-to-ban-abortion-is-rooted-in-the-great-replacement-theory/) and [misogynistic](https://www.oah.org/tah/november-3/abolishing-abortion-the-history-of-the-pro-life-movement-in-america/) ones, with the AMA propaganda campaign that eventually got it banned in all states for the first time in *1910* being based on complete lies and smear.
