A good response, but I’d reach for the Constitution instead of the Declaration…

I think there has been an effort to restrict education in the United States
I believe an early step was removing civics as a subject in schools

Not just our right, *our duty*.

I recommend Howard Zinn’s “People’s History of the United States” if you’re not familiar with it.

Guarantee that most people with this line of thinking have never actually read the Declaration of Independence in its entirety.

The caller is being asked to discuss his views. Unfortunately this is not possible, it is all emotion and very little logic. He tries, and fails, to even make a single point. I’ve seen this many times when I have asked people to give a reason why they believe what they do, why I’m wrong and they are right. They simply can’t because their emotional state won’t allow it. We aren’t going to fix anything until we stop the addiction to political rage.

Like him or not, having an lazy argument with Howard Zinn who is insanely smart, educated, and made a life speaking to his work was never going to go the way that guy thought it would.

Americans have always had a fundamental issue understanding how America works and who America works for.
We didn’t create the Declaration of Independence to just blindly follow whom ever is elected.

That’s the conservative playbook. Call someone un-American so that you can take away all of the rights that they have as an American.

If only the caller was able to actually hear those words. Unfortunately, and in my opinion, people that criticize things/ people in the manner, the caller did, often have an inability to listen.

As someone that lives in Newport News, we still have a lot of people like that… not as much as Hampton, Poquosen, Suffolk or Virginia Beach, but still a lot…

Understand please, that there is a large effort to reject this notion of what it means to be American. GOP think tanks, with JD Vance as the main spokesperson, are attempting to redefine what being “American” is.
They wish to replace the ideals, the community, and the beliefs espoused here as truly American with blood and soil heritage.
Their purpose is to refute the argument in this video by saying that “America” is owned by the people who have lived here the longest, and it is whatever they say it is.
