In Istanbul’s Fatih district stands a remarkable four-story home, each level telling a story from a different chapter of the city’s past. The bottom floor holds Roman-era foundations, while above it, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Turkish Republic elements rise like chapters in a living history book. Built gradually over centuries, this house isn’t just a home it’s a vertical timeline of Istanbul’s rich and complex identity. Each floor reveals architectural styles, materials, and artifacts unique to its time, offering a rare glimpse into how the city evolved through conquest, culture, and resilience. From Roman stonework to Ottoman woodwork, the structure stands as a testament to the layers of civilization that built modern Istanbul. It shows how new generations didn’t erase the past but built on it, creating a continuous story of survival and transformation. This house is a living museum, inviting us to walk through time without ever leaving one spot. It challenges us to see history not just as dates, but as layers shaping the present.

There are trees coming out the side. Are the lower floors just filled with earth?

They don’t want you to know this, but byzantine empire is literally THE roman empire, just christian.
The people call themselves romans and the empire the roman empire, but modern history changes the name to byzantine because it doesn’t fit their image of hellenistic roman aesthetic that happens a thousand years ago

And the building is really old, but not roman empire old.
