When the exterior starts to crack like this you really should find a larger gas canister that it can transfer too. A smaller lining will come along and use this old one.

Don’t try to aid the can by peeling the dry skin off. Doing so too soon can hurt the can underneath.
Soon it will stretch its new wings and fly away to find a mate.
