It’s just so stores don’t have to pay as many cashiers
Dman1791 on
I honestly prefer self-checkouts, as long as they aren’t the ones that complain if you don’t manage to bag the item within 0.17 seconds or like to call for an associate if you so much as breathe on the bagging area. No need to interact with a cashier that corporate is making ask a bunch of bull, and I can get through a lot faster if I’m just doing a couple things.

Who cares why the stores do it? Many people seem to hate it, so I can use it to get out of the store faster. I see this as an absolute win.

Given the choice between waiting behind 3 carts full of groceries and screaming children, and quickly paying for my 3 or 4 items and leaving… I know what I’ll choose.

I hate the “I’m doing your work” argument as a cashier. There’s registers with people at them, if you hate self checkout that much use a cashier and STFU. The company doesn’t pay employees anywhere near enough to care about your hatred of self checkout.

Self checkouts are great and the only people who I have ever seen who disliked them were technologically inept boomers who expect to be waited on in every aspect of their lives.

I love doing self checkout because I worked in a grocery store and other retail from 16 until my late twenties so I know what I’m doing and can fly through a whole cart in no time. I hate self checkout because other people don’t know what the hell they are doing.

I might be wrong but I feel like stores are trying to move away from self checkout. Too many issues with people stealing stuff. Personally I prefer to use self checkout

It can be for both customer convenience and for the convenience of the cashiers. These two things are not mutually exclusive.
I use both depending on the situation

I think largely, it was a customer continence thing but quickly became the opposite. Many grocers get it wrong with the weight and items in bag then you wait for an employee. IMO Home Depot is the best version of self checkout

Scan 2 items
Stops working.
Remove an item.
Still doesn’t work.
Have to wait a minute for someone to come over, fixes it.
Scans 3 more things.
Surprising item, have to wait.
Instead of 5 minutes, it takes upwards of 10 minutes. Especially when it’s busy and they have a single person manning the self checkout area.

How hard is it to ring your own groceries up? Lazy fucks.
Only time I hate it is when slow people occupy all of the open registers. It is made for quick shoppers. Kind of like the left lane of the highway equivalent for grocery stores

I’d rather self checkout. I hate talking to people.

Why is this a topic to complain about? How lazy are you? You can’t scan a few of *your* items without expecting compensation? It’s not even mandatory. What’s with the sudden rise of anti-self checkout posts on Reddit?

I get through the self checkout line faster than any cashier gets me through their own line. And i also scan and pay for it faster than any cashier does. Its 100% my favorite thing. Ill use it when i got a cart stuffed full of groceries cause i care for my time way more than a cashier does.

I hate that mindset, if you shat on the floor it’d be someone’s job to clean up but if you were nice enough to Keep it in then you didn’t impose on the employees
Account_Maximum on
A hot take – but for me personally, it’s very convenient. I’m a quick person and most people are usually slow to me. There’s almost always a free self checkout so I don’t have to wait in queue, I scan quickly and go on my day. I hate shopping from the bottom of my heart, so the less friction I encounter, the happier I’ll be.

Self checkouts were nice when they were an option for when it got too busy. Now that self checkout is the norm it’s very frustrating. Give me the days when self checkout was new and we still had around six employee operated checkouts.

1. I dislike the obnoxious comments from store employees about what I’m buying. So what if I’m buying a bunch of something that’s on sale. I’m saving money by stocking up while it’s at a lower price.
2. If a store has 10 traditional checkout lanes, there will only be 2-3 people working at them. Even if there is a long line, stores won’t get more people to work the checkout.
3. Some Walmart stores have transitioned over to 90% self checkout lanes. If you have to wait in line, it’s maybe a minute at most. In stores that are predominantly traditional checkout with some self checkout, you’re probably going to spend a minimum of 5 minutes waiting in line. Probably more if it’s busy.

I “manage” the self checkouts at my job and it’s harder to do imo
I have to watch more than one register and I have to help people out if they don’t know how to use it. And I deal with a bunch of grown up temper tantrums over the SCOs
Regular register is easy, but I can’t have as many registers open at a time

Self checkout is much quicker but the amount of errors it comes up with bagging is so annoying.
