      Both not really creeping up on anyone. Zollverein, Norddeutscher Bund, events cast their shadows. By the time of the Prusso-Danish and Austro-Prussian wars no one could really feign surprise. Also, it’s not like Prussia had been a nonentity before that.

      Italians also took some time warming up by kicking out the Austrians (Lombardy) and Spanish (Sicilies). That was through by 1860. Then they waited for the Prussians to do their thing. Prussians fight Austrians, Italians yoink Venice, Prussians fight France, Italians grab the papal states (which had guarantees from Napoleon III).

      Sorry, not feeling it.

      Europe was basically a group project where two guys suddenly showed up and said “we run things now.”
