There are a few services/apps/games that I interact with that congratulate and reward me for showing up every day. And show up every day is exactly what I do because I don't want to miss out on imaginary coins or seeing that days in a row number go up by one. I want to start a trend where at the beginning of a new year, every unhealthy streak gets broken.
Are you logging in to a game every day to get some reward? Don't do it for a few days. Are you suspicious that DuoLingo isn't really teaching you a language but you have a 1,000 day streak? Break it and use all of your streak freezes.
By all means, come back after you break the streak if you want. But do break the streak. I'm breaking all of my useless streaks starting January 1 and every January 1 after that, if not more often. I hope others see the value as well.
What I DON'T mean is to break entirely healthy streaks. If you're counting the days that you've been getting regular exercise or not smoking, then keep it up!

What’s the longest useless you streak you have going on now?
My DuoLingo streak is up to 634 days. A while ago I just couldn’t take how sloppy and full of mistakes their high level Japanese content was, but I paid for a premium account and have just been showing up for the chess course for the last few weeks. Looking forward to breaking my streak soon and deleting the app the same day the subscription runs out.
