The original crown was unearthed from the tombs of the Emperor and Empress in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, in 2013. it was in such a terrible shape that even handling it could crumble it to dust, so it was sent into a lab inside the lump of earth it was in. Testing revealed it was made of various materials including gold, copper, iron, glass, marble, pearl, wood, lacquer, cotton, silk, etc., and was made using different techniques including hammering and shaping, filigree, granulation, gilding, gold-leaf application, chasing and engraving, lacquerwork, etc. Because the crown was so fragile, decisions were made that no more cleaning will be done, instead a replica (the one in the picture) was made to show what it would have looked like.
