My grandad was captured by the Germans and like many thousands of others he was transported to Germany where he was a slave laborer, sometimes called a forced laborer
This is the front page of his ID, issued by the Nazi regime in 1944
It says “German Reich” and “Work book for foreigners”
Inside is his photo, personal details and a work record
He was forced to work as a coal miner in a small town.
I have looked up the location of his camp and found out some horrendous things occurred in the same town related to foreign forced laborers and their babies at the Nazi “Birthing Centre”.
According to wiki, the birthing Centre was for foreign slave laborers, many of the babies born there were left to die. I did not know about these birthing centers until recently.
