    1. This letter was written by a U.S. Serviceman named Clinton. Unfortunately the letter didn’t come with the envelope, so I don’t have any information about him. But based on the content in the letter, I do believe he was writing from somewhere in North Africa.

      The letter reads:

      >“ I guess.
      Saturday
      April 3rd 1943

      >Hello folks
I have forgotten the date of the month but I guess I am pretty close to it. Things have been happening so fast that I couldn’t keep up with the date.

      >There are some good news and some bad news, so I will tell the bad news first so the good news will cheer you up. The axis planes have been worrying us quite a bit lately. They come over all times of the day and nite to, but haven’t been dropping any bombs near us. The last few days our planes have been patrolling around here and they have gotten several of the axis planes. Just yesterday we had some real excitement.

      >Our planes knocked some of them out of the sky. Our planes got after two German bombers. And they were fighting right over our heads. And boy were we cheering for them. Everybody was hollering “go get them!”. We would say, “thats the way boys, give it to the dirty Nazis”. It sounded like a big ball game was going on. They knocked it down and we watched it go down. The pilot jumped out when the bomber caught on fire and landed not far from – (uh oh. Here comes some more. Will continue later) – the planes and they captured him.

      >Well they didn’t do anything, just looking around I guess.

      >Yesterday was an exciting day for us. We saw several dog fights in the air. We enjoy seeing them. Some fun. ha. What I mean by dog fighting is when our planes get after the enemy.

      >Well I am still O.K. and doing fine. Not doing anything much but laying around and jumping in and out of Fox holes when the planes come over.

      >Guess you are beginning to farm right by now. The weather here seems like farming weather, it is nice and warm. Gets pretty hot about midday.

      >I hope you all have good health this year and can make a real good crop.

      >Has David gotten him a job yet. I hope he has. Wouldn’t like to see him in the service, it is no place for him. I don’t thank. But for me it is ok.

      >Well hope all of you are well and not worrying too much about me. I am a long way from the front lines. Just planes that bother us.

      >So long for this time. Be good and say hello to all the folks,

      >Clinton. “
