Mother Elephant can’t get over the fact that her baby has died. She now carries it everywhere, even to the water hole.

Elephants react to death in a way that feels surprisingly deep. When a calf dies, the mother often stays with the body for hours and tries to lift it, even when she already knows it will not get up again. The whole herd becomes quiet. They touch the body gently with their trunks and keep a kind of silent watch, almost as if they are honoring a tradition they have always followed. We cannot claim they feel exactly what humans feel, yet their behaviour shows a real sense of loss and connection that is hard to ignore.

That was not a normal elephant noise.

That was the bereaved wail of someone who has had their heart ripped out.

Sorry elephant mama, I hope you’re in a better place now

    3. I’ve seen this with humans too. Idk if animals do it for the same reasons but sometimes I see people refuse to let other shroud and bury their dead loved ones because they believe that their loved one is still alive and cannot accept their death. The grief and attachment is so strong and they’ll convince themselves that their loved one is just in a sleep like state.

There is real evidence that elephants and whales ARE MORE emotionally developed than humans. The emotional part of their brains is much larger, overall, than ours. I believe they are feeling and grieving to a depth that we cannot comprehend.
