Looks like the left wing touching down first helped with the landing by having it spin sideways. Had it gone down tail or head side first seems like it would have made it cartwheel which sounds far worse

Edit: so I kept reading, and I should say both the pilot and first officer are both very honorable men. The first officer fought off the hijackers long enough for the pilot to even have an attempt at landing the plane. The hijackers were convinced he was lying about the fuel
