“The Gigamoon”: the sharpest public domain photo of the moon ever taken, at 1.3 gigapixels. It’s a mosaic of over 280,000 photos, revealing incredible detail, including the Apollo landing sites, captured by astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy.

PD? Where download?
Stop trying to prove it’s not cheese!
Imma download this then tell everyone my phone did 200x zoom and took this photo.
The moon is beautiful af
I’m still looking for an uncompressed file, but there is a version that’s easy to navigate without requiring the RAM needed to load it: [https://www.easyzoom.com/imageaccess/40d920f226e9451cba72a74430be5fd2](https://www.easyzoom.com/imageaccess/40d920f226e9451cba72a74430be5fd2)
Andrew McCarthy. Does he call this photo Pretty in Pink?
Arggh! Where is the landing site?
Anybody know what the dark patches are? Some sort of mineral deposit?
I still can’t believe Armageddon was filmed here
What about the Ivan Drago and Clubber Lang landing sites ?
Can someone explain the strong colouration? I’m assuming some kind of filter was used.
Still not a high enough resolution to be able to get a clear picture of OP’s tiny dick.
Too bad someone gave such a nice collection of images such a stupid name.
Is the damage still up there when General Zod destroyed one of the landing sites trying to find planet Hooston.
Andrew is an amazing talent and passionate astrophotographer. We made a short documentary about him a few years ago.

Where is the landing site?
Looks a little…. rusty, no?
Almost like it’s… hollow, no?
u/ajamesmccarthy might be my favorite photographer.
The number of impact craters is insane!
Amazing. Even with a powerful camera, the difference in detail due to light difference of the dark side is jarring
Look at all them pretty colours

why some of its part are purple or yellow?
How tall are those craters? Dimensiones
Fun fact: The sea of serenity (brownish maroon circle in upper part of photo 1 is about the size of New Mexico.
There is so much detail in this picture the moon is almost unrecognizable in it. You could tell me this is the opposite side of the moon and I wouldn’t be surprised.
No wonder things on earth are the way they are… Our moon looks beat to shit.. are those bruises ??
It’s now I realize the earth is the crack house of the universe.
Andrew is a must follow if you’re on the hellscape that is X.
Why is it that the moon has thousands of visible craters and pock marks from taking meteor hits over the years across it’s barren landscape, yet the surface of the Earth does not look like this at all.
Has the moon really gotten hit by that many more meteors over time than the Earth has?
Yo dawg, I heard you liked craters…
How would I go about making these pictures for my pc background? Like how could I download and upscale to whatever I need, I think I’m asking correctly?
poor moon takes a lot of our damage for us
if you could see the flag they planted or the the buggy they left..
“Due to the volume of people asking- I wanted to illustrate where you can find the Apollo landing sites on my GigaMoon image- complete with zooming down to see the landers” Andrew McArthy.

I believe this is actually NASA’s 1:1 replica that they built to shoot the fake moon landing. Really shows their commitment to detail.
