      Diego was brought to a breeding center on Santa Cruz Island in 1977 to join a conservation program.
      He was a prolific breeder, fathering an estimated 800 to 900 offspring.
      His contribution was crucial, with his descendants making up about 40% of the new population.
      Retirement: The breeding program ended in January 2020. Diego was officially retired and released back onto Española Island in June 2020.
      He now roams free on his native island, a symbol of conservation success.
