“What do you mean you saw them just stare out the windows as they barreled into the station!”

    1. Context: 1906 Grantham Rail Accident.

To this day the cause of this accident has an odd mystery surrounding it with witnesses stating that the sparks from the brakes were witnessed as the train ran into the station, but the evidence of signalman Day at Grantham South box was very alarming as he had seen both men “standing looking out of their respective glasses in front of them, but they did not actually seem to be doing anything.” As the train rushed past his box and to disaster at the station.

Possible causes of the accident have been attributed to various forms of Driver Error on the part of Driver Fleetwood ideas as to what caused him and his fireman to be seen not doing anything are as follows.

      * Illness, which Fleetwood had been recorded as having on the footplate, but didn’t report to upper management or see a Doctor about.

      * Drunkenness’ known as a drinker he never drunk on the job, this was ruled out as he both never drank on duty and the only drinks in his lunch were Tea.

      * Brake Failure witnesses reported sparks from the brakes, with the brake wheel on the engine found released but marked down to damage in the crash, it’s possible the brakes were applied last minute when out of Day’s line of sight.

      * Disorientation not knowing where they were or losing complete focus and not reacting, as likely by the lack of Whistle when approaching the signalbox, a action that Fleetwood took every time he passed through Grantham.

All of these explanations only take into account Driver Fleetwood and not Fireman Talbot, an apprentice at Doncaster Works doing his duty to learn about engine crew experience, who had stated that should Fleetwood be drunk he would attempt to over power him and wrest control, so by all account he should have been able to take control went necessary but didn’t seem to in this instant, like his driver apparently staring straight out the window.

The eerie report from Signalman Day at South Box is one of the oddest accounts of events in a rail accident I’ve ever seen, with both crew members looking out their respective cab windows as it thundered into the curve of the station and to their death, over 108 years later the cause of the crash is still unknown.

I can’t quite remember the full conversation surrounding the creation of the meme image, it’s been about Two Years but I believe this was our humorous if really morbid attempt at an explanation.
