A man refusing to do the Nazi Salute in Germany,1936 (1040 x 1051)

That man is believed to be August Landmesser, a German who had joined the Nazi Party in 1931 hoping it would help him find work.
But in 1935, Landmesser engaged with Irma Eckler, a Jewish woman, and was expelled from the party. Their relationship was illegal under the Nazi regime’s racial laws. The couple attempted to flee to Denmark but were caught.

Landmesser was imprisoned for “dishonoring the race,” and Eckler was eventually sent to a concentration camp, where she perished.
