Context. The Parsely massacre was a genocide of the Haitian population of the Dominican Republic. Facilitated by the at the time dictator of the Dominican Republic, Rafael Trujillo. Owing to his own personal anti Haitian sentiments and broader anti Haitian sentiments in Dominican society.
Lead to Trujillo ordering the Dominican army to commit the massacres against the Haitian population in Dominica. 1937 October 2-8. Many Haitians not killed by the Dominican army, would tragically die during the crossing back into Haiti. By the end of the massacres somewhere between 1/3 to 2/3 of the 60,000 populations.
After the massacres the government of Haiti at the time actively suppressed any discussion of the atrocity. Specifically at the direction of the at the time Haitian president Sténio Vincent. Who had a good relationship with Trujillo government even having financial support from them. He would only seek an international investigation after riots that broke out in Port-au-Prince due to two years of near silence and a failed coup attempt in December that year. Yet Trujillo and his regime would use this to justify his actions saying it was a response to illegal immigration by in their own words “undesirable Haitians”. With Trujillo argued that new immigration (at the time.) prohibited immigration between the two countries.
This would be rejected by the investigation with Haiti under Sténio Vincent and the USA under FDR demanding $750,000 at the time which now would be $17,480,719.42. Which Trujillo would only pay $525,000 around $11,483,159.72 now. Meant for the families of the deceased, however due to corruption in the government little would go to the families. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parsley_massacre

While Cold War Politics and wanting to counterbalance Castro was definitely part of the motive, it’s still crazy that Trujillo was so awful that the CIA (at the very least) supplied weapons to the leftist leaders that assassinated him.
Oh, Dominican Republic. I thought it was the Dominican Order.
