Americans could’ve avoided a couple centuries of racial tensions if they did what the Arabs did. On the other hand, I quite like jazz and blues and funk

Are we really going to have a “who did slavery the best” type of argument now ?

Hey the women weren’t sterilized.
Also the fact that family for American slavery was kinda broken up, sometimes on purpose by selling to other owners. The fact families existed is more testimant to the resiliance of those who suffered than the kindness of their owners.

castration is STILL a thing in that region

I feel like this was more intended to have a supply of slaves, kind of like a morbid investment, rather than allowing them to have families out of good will though.

There is a fairly large and well established black community descended from slaves in Iraq and smaller ones in several other Arab countries.

As an avid history reader, it was rare for muslims to castrate slaves themselves. They were usually castrated beforehand

“At least Europeans let them have family”
OP, that does not necessarily sound better at all. Especially since “letting them have a family” was more about breeding a new generation of slaves to abuse.

“Let them” have families? American chattel slavery tolerated slave families at best. It regularly broke them up for no reason other than economic gain, and sometimes as punishment. At worst, the ability for slaves to reproduce was used as an economic driver, leading to forced sex between slaves and forced births.
Let’s not try to positively compare one of the most horrendous and evil systems to ever exist, even to other horrendous and evil systems, please. That’s not what this sub needs.

“At least Europeans let them have a family”- Yeah, and that is supposed to be “better”? That statement makes it seem like Europeans are God who decides who gets to procreate which is just horrible.

They did not, in fact, let them have families because those families were property and could be split up and sold off at will. Try reading a single fucking book on this subject.

Lol no Europeans didn’t let them have families. For most African slaves life in the New World was a death sentence. Loss of life among slaves in the Caribbean was incredibly high, but the profit margins on sugar production was so high plantation owners could afford to work slaves to death and then replace them. There was no ‘nice’ version of slavery or the slave trade.

Nuance of the topic aside, it feels like this sub is mostly people’s thinly veiled political gripes propped up by pop historical fun facts

I did a quick google search. There isn’t a single country that hasn’t owned slaves? You could say that some may have had them for shorter times, or treated them slightly better. But they still had slaves.

Not-Fun Fact: the act of castrating involved such a high risk of the victim bleeding out our getting deadly infections, that like half of the male slaves died during the process. A cost that Arabs didnt mind paying though.

Castration was uncommon, it was a dangerous practice and not economically viable
