I pay a local company around $75 to do mine. It’s quick, even when I had three W2s, and they end up getting me more money at least once because they reminded me I got a new hot water tank that year that I forgot about. That was an extra $400. It’s paid for me going there for the last couple of years.
Pay like $15 to file for state, free for filing federal. I know it’s not exactly free, but it’s been my alternative the last few tax seasons.

There are so many other free service’s. And online tax platforms today make it very difficult to do it wrong. OTL is my go to.

I’ve been filing with TurboTax for a decade and never paid them anything. But my filing is pretty straightforward since I don’t have stocks or a personal business or anything besides a full time job, so that may be why.

If your taxes are simple enough to get to use direct file you can do them easily without paying for turbo tax. The form takes like 10 mins

I mean…I’ve never paid with Turbo. But I’ve only ever had to do federal, as I live in a state that doesn’t do state income tax

You can still download tax forms and send them in to the IRS. For most people- people whose only income is a W2 and don’t itemize anything for deductions- filling out those forms isn’t that hard. Direct File has only existed since 2022 anyway.

You can also see if your local community college or university has a free tax filing program. 2 schools near me file w2 under 65k for free, because the students need so many returns filed to credit to graduate. The only drawback is that sometimes it takes a while because the student files, then it gets double checked by the instructor, but it is completely free

The only reason why we have to pay these companies to do our taxes is because the companies lobby the government to make filing taxes difficult.
