Douglas Ciríaco is a doctor from Ouro Branco in Alagoas, Brazil, known for treating patients without asking for payment. Many of those he helps come from remote areas with little access to medical care. Instead of money, they thank him with simple gifts like fruit, vegetables, eggs, or baked goods.

    4. Whatever he is doing is working! He went from a… small person, sorry if that is not the correct term. To a large person!

    5. That is a gentleman with a huge heart and I hope he has only the best things happening for him the rest of his life.

Rather than interesting… It is more like heroes we need than actors and sportspersons

Good on this guy, that he’s able to do this and

My father grew up in a poor farming community in the fifties and sixties and that’s what the town doctor there did, too. It’s seen as a media trope for old country doctors to accept farm goods as payment but it’s really something that used to happen in the US.

I bet there are a lot of doctors in poor communities now that would love to be able to accept barter for medical care but unfortunately our stupid system makes this impossible and since the people that would be able to barter still can’t pay they just get no medical care at all

    9. He’s a doctor from the public healthcare system in Brazil (SUS), so of course he doesn’t ask for payment. Still awesome, though. He’s Instagram is @dr.douglasciriaco for those who want to see more pictures.

He’s amazing but let’s not act like this is a first. Missionary doctors exist all over the world. And this guy is one of those amazing people.

    11. I don’t care if it’s just a kid handing me one of those woven hotpads they made with the fabric loops (can’t remember what it’s called) , honestly, if I was given something instead of money, it would have more value instead of money to me. Especially in places like this. Because you know these people are giving you not just what they have, but something they put their hard work, heart and soul into.

I think that’s what truly makes this man special, is that he clearly recognizes that. They aren’t giving him food. Its food that they’ve grown, picked, raised, even maybe scrimped and saved to buy. He knows that refusing that is worse than a slap in the face, on top of the fact they need medical care they’d ordinarily not be able to afford.
