Estimated to be taken in in 1869 when Tad and Mary were living in Frankfurt. Tad would end up dying of tuberculosis in Chicago in 1871 after their return from Europe at the age of 18.
Interesting note, apparently he developed a vague German accent when he returned according to John Hay, one of Abe Lincoln's secretaries.
