Brigham Young (1801-1877), date unknown, Second Prophet of the Church of Latter Day Saints. A iron fisted administrator who led the Mormon exodus from the Midwest and founded the theocratic state of Deseret (later to be known as Utah), he also was a serial polygamist with 56 wives and avowed racist.

    1. Serial polygamist? That would be more like someone who repeatedly got married and divorced. This guy ran it parallel.

    2. He was also guilty of profanity, gluttony and eventually died after a bout of gout while running from the federal government for polygamy.

He was well known for sending men on “missions” where he was certain the men wouldn’t survive so he could take their wives to add to his “harem.”

He wasn’t afraid of having men beaten for swearing while having no problem swearing and cursing whenever he felt like it.

Personally, his biggest achievement (in my opinion) was planting followers in the crowd when he made his move to take over the Mormon church with many claiming to see the face of Joseph on him as a sign of god intending him to take over.

We could also point out that the Salt Lake valley wasn’t unknown and he’d sent people ahead with “This is the right place” (shortened to This is the Place) as an extension of conversations with trappers and scouts he’d sent forward and not out of any form of divine prophesy or inspiration.

His proclamation that unmarried men over 26 was a controlling tactic to keep young men home, married, busy, and too tired to question his tactics.

I guess the possibility exists that all of this was God speaking to him, but to me this is a man who should be remembered as violent, angry, greedy, and willing to do almost anything to get what he wanted.

Quite a lot of this is public record (or was) within the Mormon church. Some of it is educated guesses. None of it points to a good man.

    3. One of the greatest mistakes we ever made in this country was not putting Brigham Young in front of a firing squad for treason.

    4. Had no idea how crazy Mormons were until watching American Primeval. They don’t teach kids in the east that the U.S. government basically signed an armistice with a militarized cult and let them retain control over an entire state as long as they were chill about certain things.
