    1. Just Roman Empire
      In 476, the last western Roman emperor send his robes and titles to the Eastern emperor. There just one empire.

      Unless we’re going to insist that no one ever use the word China again, and instead write 中国 (pronounced *Zhōngguó)* I think we can get off the high horse of not referring to places by the same terms they used for themselves.

      These are all rather byzantine rules to follow on where we can and can’t draw the line on naming conventions.

      it’s almost like it was a empire centred around a city that used to be named Byzantium and no longer has a city named Rome

    4. Well at least we can all agree that it’s more Roman than the Holy Roman Empire.. but wait a minute the HRE actually had Rome at one point..

I don’t care how the Greeks called themselves at that time, I call it the Byzantine Empire because it was that culturally and religiously different from the early Roman Empire (the one that still had Rome as its capital) that that’s enough to distinguish it with another descriptor to make it more obvious what one’s talking about.

      I also think that Byzantine Empire sounds much cooler than Eastern Roman Empire.
