It is a good idea to examine the claims made or implied by this sort of stuff. Is the sole point of EBT seeing people do not starve to death? Well, no. The point is to provide support and one hopes a modicum of dignity to our neighbors in their need, as an expression of human solidarity. Not starving is an essential part of that, but is not the sole purpose. The purpose of prison loaf is punishment and humiliation.

When I was on food stamps, I lost a lot of weight. I wasn’t overweight to begin with. When I had access to a food shelf, that was huge for me. When I didn’t, for a while 1 meal a day would be a spoonful of peanut butter and a large glass of water so I could feel a little full and didn’t just run out of food. There is nothing luxurious about being on food stamps.
