      Just wanna say, before anyone else says something, before the late 17th century, the helmet either would have had detachable decorative components OR the samurai would have simply worn a different helmet in battle, as close-range combat was employed before them (as in, swords, bows and arrows, not cannons and guns). By the late 17th century, there were tools available that allowed for long-range battle, and ornamental armor was in wide use to stand out against friendly fire and to intimidate the enemy.
