This is just grandstanding for attention. Governors can’t “ban” the use of H1b visas by their state universities. He can try to implement a policy against accepting them, but the policy would be faced with all sorts of court challenges, and precedent isn’t on his side.

The maga voters see this as a win.
Their entire platform is based on insecurity and fear.
The losers know how worthless and unintelligent they are. Their goal is to bring everyone down to their level, and force their worldview onto the country to make themselves feel comfy and satisfy their desperate need to be validated and empowered.
The politicians have the same insecurities, but they use these sad individuals to build their wealth.

This is DEI. If they were all about qualifications and having the best people to work in florida, wouldn’t eliminating the H1B visas be detrimental to that claim. And INCLUDING only Florida residents as the options means DEI hires. Fascinating.

The strength of the United States in the post-war era was that this was the place to come.
We used to be really proud about that; that we were the land of opportunity. But it wasn’t just out of sheer altruism. Many global, dominant industries were formed here or perfected here by immigrants who felt starting their business or doing their research here was a better opportunity than in their home country.
For the party that loves Capitalism so much, it’s so strange to have such anti-capitalist views. The H-1B visa program and similar programs means that corporations can attract the very very best from around the world and helps to prevent countries like Pakistan, India, China, and others from eventually leap-frogging the United States in up and coming industries like AI. Those countries desperately want to compete on the world stage so they’re investing heavily in educating their populace and digging themselves out of the bottom of the barrel economically. China is going to dominate the global economy because they’ve been doing this for quite a while.
Dismanting the H-1B system just ensures that those countries can do it even better. And given that the U.S. is *not* as big a part of the global economy as Republicans seem to believe? Well that’s another issue. In a tariff-laden, isolated American future; companies in Europe and Asia might prefer to do business with firms in India, Pakistan, China, or elsewhere in Europe or Asia; instead of the United States. When reciprocal tariffs mean an iPhone is $3,000 in Europe; that just means that Samsung and Huawei and others will dominate the market. Forget exporting cars all around the world; Chinese EV’s are going to absolutely destroy American automakers because China has made massive investments in building EV’s and as the market shifts, we’re already seeing what’s going to happen. And, whether Republicans like or not; eventually the whole world is going to make massive investments in green energy including the United States. Because frankly it eventually will cross the threshold into where it just doesn’t make even a modicum of economic sense not too; so even countries that don’t care about climate change will be buying only green energy ‘stuff’. China’s massive investments in this sector means the whole world, including the United States, is going to build its power grids with Chinese-made components produced by Chinese companies and designed by Chinese engineers. China can build batteries cheaper than we even know how to build. We already can’t compete with something that, no matter how much you like or dislike it; is going to be the dominant segment of the automotive economy. And, sure, people in America will still buy F-150’s. But these American companies are going to really struggle without the export market.
One of the strange ironies is that in some ways we’re seeing another party flip. Prior to the 1980’s, Democrats would’ve been the ones to be iffy on things like H-1B’s. Not for the racist motivations of Republicans today, I’ll concede. But protectionism was a big part of the party that used to be very pro-union and pro-labor. And they would’ve been especially nervous about the use of programs like this to hire cheaper foreign workers. A problem, by the way, that is entirely solved by unions! Union protections means everyone gets equitable pay so a company can take advantage of immigrant labor if it’s struggling to attract talent; but can’t just pay them less to displace folks who already live here.
But the Republican position has absolutely flipped because this is bad for business and bad for the long-term dominance of the American economy. The decisions being made today by the Trump admin and similar ilk are going to result in the United States being something like Germany or the U.K. in another few decades. Still big, sure, with some strong industries. But not the dominant player it is today.

It’s just like Trumps Canada tarrifs. It nuked America’s tourism revenue, decimated farm supplies and crippled so many business who export to Canada, and it gained absolutely nothing in return. Meanwhile in Canada, we’re literally doing just fine. Making more trade relationships with China and other countries instead, and also about to steal your baseball championship.

The US as a whole has really done an immaculate job of convincing the unintelligent electorate that the people with no power, who have barely any control over their own lives, are the ones causing them all their problems in their own lives, not the ones who are in power, make the laws, and rob them blind in front of their wide shut eyes.
