    1. What happens the other direction? Does train then derail or does it have some sort of safety mechanism to override brain dead workers?

Now I need to know. Can this be done with only the locomotive propulsion, or it needs other locos/ outside towing?

We’ve done this with track skates in a Bowl after someone let autoracks roll with misaligned draw heads. Shit happens, misaligned drawheads, bad switch points, bad rail or rolled rail, loads hit empties while kicking or humping cars.
For those asking, once one set of wheels hits the ground the ones behind tend to follow. Some of the track equipment has essentially a mini crane to lift the car and set it back on the track. Sometimes if it isn’t loaded you can do it with a backhoe/excavator/forklift depending on location.

    4. Wow, the second wheel on that bogie dragged the … uh … banana … somewhat! I thought that it would have been attached to the rail, but nope!

I guess experience has taught them to NOT attach it, let the wheels do what they need and … success!
