I want my taxes to fund healthcare, education, and social security, not golf trips!

    1. Or Gold Ballrooms. Or propping up an Argentinian dictator at the expense of American Farmers. And etc. Ad Nauseum.

    2. My taxes not being used to actively destroy the country which I pay them to… what a world that would be!

    3. Man, just imagine if there was some way to actually vote on what you wanted your taxes to go towards. Wonder how hard the actual numbers would flip.

    4. Yeah, but you don’t have choice on how the government spends your taxes….

Oh wait. You do have choice.

You elect representatives whose entire job is to vocalize the needs of their constituents. Yet they are on an extended vacation because they got elected and the job has shifted to just voting on party lines.

Anyone living under a red congressmen should be making themselves heard right now. What congress is doing is ridiculous.

Anyone living under a blue state should be making themselves heard right now. We are (likely) funding a red state that supports starving children both physically and intellectually.

Our tax dollars are meant to be used on the people who paid it. Not ballrooms or nuke testing or propaganda or murder or Argentina. So why the heck is everyone just hanging back and waiting for this to resolve itself naturally?

    5. Thank you! Maintained roads, hospitals, and an educated, healthy populace are hallmarks of a functioning society.

Starving toddlers, the elderly homeless, and abandoned veterans are the hallmarks of a failed society.

Fool’s gold-plated ballrooms erected over the grave of historic architecture are unnecessary in any society.

    6. The problem with the tanks is that it’s all umbrella-ed under “Defense Budget”. Defense I think is a reasonable expense, it’s just that…………we clearly spend a lot on offense too.

Agreed. I’d happily double my taxes if it meant healthcare and food security for all.

At the moment our taxes are also going to dragging screaming parents from their cars in front of schools and then body slamming any elderly American nearby that objects to it.

This is the disconnect and why Americans hate taxes so much. People with money hate taxes because they lose so much of it and see no benefit. People with low income hate taxes because they lose 12% of each check that they could really use and SNAP gives them $85/month to feed their families.

Bernie Sanders has been talking about this since the 80s. We can do more if we cooperate and taxes are a good thing as long as they aren’t wasted on war. We can get our heads around libraries, police, schools, and utilities being good things that taxes pay for, but the second you say you want a program that gives low income people food, shelter, or medicine they flip out, and I think it’s because we have this tendency to ONLY want to provide those last two things to low income people.

If you instead said “everyone gets $30k/year as universal basic income. Your first $60k of earnings will be taxed at a rate of 50%, so you still make more money working than not, and everyone gets Medicare”. That doesn’t leave out wealthy people and it doesn’t have a cliff that people fall off of if they make $5 more than their allowed to.
