Video recorded by a crewmember inside the plane of the U.S. Air Force Reserve’s 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, which flew inside the eye of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa. The footage shows how the plane is getting thrown around and how the crew reacts to the turbulence.

Fair enough. I’m more interested in the fact they are allowed to film and publish this kind of video from inside US Air Force aircraft. But I guess they are. Cool footage!!

I heard the seats were reengineered to secure their balls of steel as well.

Just remember this video when you’re flying commercial. Planes are designed to handle turbulence. Once you figure out it’s not going to hurt you it actually becomes fun. Flying debris is really the only concern.

No thank you!

I guess it’s the crew’s first time? First time taking video too.

When the team that says “oh, we’re flying into part of a hurricane that is setting records” then says “there was more turbulence than we like”, it must be pretty serious.

This looks like the inside of the NOAA P-3 they use for hurricane hunting, not the inside of a C-130

Meh. I’ve jumped out of C130s in worse weather than that. Or at least it felt like it.

How many times do you have to fly through an eye-wall before you secure every little piece of flying shrapnel??

I am surprised this plane were able to leave the ground at all with all the weight of the balls.

Whenever a flight hits wild turbulence, I laughingly tell my wife it’s more fun if you raise your arms like a rollercoaster. Her while knuckles and scowl at me says she does NOT agree.
