I’m not from USA so your policies aren’t most familiar to me. But I remember hearing from an American Youtuber, who made a video about welfare in USA 6 years ago, that you can’t get anything unhealthy with “food stamps” Has it changed?

History repeats itself, or at least rhymes.

Flashback to election night 1994. Republicans took the Congress, and the news outlets interviewed people about why they voted for them. One person, who admitted she was on welfare and other public assistance, said she voted for the Republicans because ‘they’ll get rid of the folks who shouldn’t get get it, so there’ll be more money for me”

Voting against their self interests since Reagan….

    3. If we can’t dictate what the rich do with their money why the fuck should it matter what those less fortunate do with theirs?

    4. I was having this argument with another redditor about shopping for clothes while having government assistance. They were upset the person was buying clothes from the Gap instead of shopping at the thrift store without knowing anything about the shopper. My argument was that poor people are allowed to enjoy things too for time to time and it’s pretty heartless to force them to constantly demean themselves because others think they’re not worthy of the occasional nice thing because they are poor. I mean for fucks sake they’re shopping at the Gap and not at Hermes. Some people have lost all touch with reality and the ability to give people grace.

It sounds harsher in a North American accent (Canada/US) then it does in English or Australian. And I’m here for it cuz that’s what these ghouls are.

    6. While I fully agree with this man’s sentiment ; I hope this shut down hits hard and last a long time. I’m not saying this to be cruel but I am sick and tired of my maga parents praising trump and blaming democrats for everything. I want them to feel the hurt and see just what they voted for.

The people he’s talking about are the same people who have *ZERO* to say about Trump and the Republicans before him redistributing literally tens of trillions of dollars from the bottom 90% to the top 1% over the last 50 years. They’re fine with taking from the poor to feed the rich, so long as they can see “their team” winning on TV.

    8. I fully understand the frustration one feels when they find out someone is gaming the system. And I have personally met people who intentionally take advantage of these programs. The “welfare queens” the right talks about? They exist. I’ve talked to them. But they’re not the majority. The majority of people on assistance really fucking need it, so why would we deprive the needy based on the selfish?

And if anyone in this country is legitimately concerned about fairness they would wonder why our president paid under $600 in income taxes in a recent year. Or why billionaires are getting tax breaks. Or why Argentina just got $40,000,000,000 from us.

    9. Fun fact: some deep red states are doubling down and not allowing snacks and sugary foods to be purchased with SNAP money. So being able to afford an occasional treat is out of the question for many SNAP recipients. Congrats you fucking spiteful maga nazis. I can only hope that a large number of the SNAP users actually voted for this to happen to them.

And better yet, move far, far, far, far, far away! From those of us with reason… I have no issue with this country being separated into them and everyone who wants others to have safe, comfortable lives!! Guess I’m just a man married to a man that cannot believe I am concerned (in this country) yet again… what!?

    11. We did an exercise about food stamps in a church group once. Everyone got a piece of paper with foods listed, and some tokens to represent money. Different foods required different amounts of tokens. After we took time to put our tokens on the paper we were invited to talk about how we’d made our choices.

The understanding dawning on people’s faces when I explained my choice to get cookies as one of my foods was encouraging. I just explained that sometimes you feel a little desperate. Everyone, including me, was trying to be responsible with the tokens, but not having anything “fun” really sucks the joy out of living.
