The skull is from a soldier in the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteers (an African American regiment featured in the film “Glory”), a regiment that was decimated at Fort Wagner, South Carolina in 1863. The skull was found in 1876.

That doesn’t seem that impressive. Something called a 12-lb artillery shell seems like it would be able to blow someone’s head off
Eh… not likely. The 12 pounders of the day had a bore of 4.62 inches. Could have been a piece of grape shot fired from a 12 pounder though.

If you think that looks like the hole is too small for an ironball that weighs 6kg. It’s just that the skull belonged to a very very large man.

Looks like a musket ball, a 12 pound cannon ball would completely eviscerate a head.

How the hell is that skull not in a billion pieces?

This can’t be a 12 pound party shell wound
This is more likely a grapeshot/canister ( likely grapeshot. Think bird shot versus buckshot for canister versus grapeshot) wound
A 12 pounder cannon ball would
1. Take off your head
2. The size alone is about the size (volume might be a better way of putting it?) as the human brain
3. Take off your head

More likely made by a ball from a 12lb canister shot.

In Dutch we have a saying, het ene oor in het andere oor uit.
Translated it says “in the one ear out the other”. Describing a situation where a person listens but ignores the information.

Wouldn’t this be more of a grapeshot from a 12lber? Cuz a 12lb cannonball would be more like 5 inches in diameter.

Definitely not an artillery shell. Most likely grapeshot. Think the puckle gun from Assassin’s Creed black flag.

12 pound artillery shell wouldn’t even fit through that hole and would most likely turn the whole head into red mist. This seems more in line with grape shot wounds. Could be a grape shot from 12 pound cannon tho

How come the rest of the skull is not shattered if such a mass had hit it? Gotta be something of less mass and more speed.

If he got hit in the head with a 12 pounder, we wouldn’t be looking at an entrance/exit would. We’d be looking at small skull fragments

12-pound shell vs. skull: 0, 1, history wins.
