    1. Oh Jesus. Why does this get posted over and over again.

It’s not ok. Imagine being this guy.

Edit: even if a comedian with Tourette’s uses their own condition for humor, it can still feel exploitative to others. It’s understandable that I find it insensitive rather than normalizing, and my feelings are valid.

It can feel a bit exploitative because of the power dynamics at play – most of the audience are neurotypical, and they hold the social power in the room. When the joke centres more on the condition than the person, the laughter can end up reinforcing stereotypes instead of challenging them. Even if the comedian means well, their self-mocking humour can become the version everyone accepts, and suddenly people feel entitled to mimic or make light of it. There’s also that uneasy sense of someone having to turn real struggle into entertainment, or use humour as a shield just to make others comfortable. In the end, it feels off when the laughs serve the neurotypical crowd more than they tell the truth of what living with the condition is actually like.

There was a doco about several people who had Tourette Syndrome tics. One poor girl couldn’t stop making the Nazi salute and swearing her head off. Some tics were utterly debilitating. The doco showed when music was introduced into their lives… the tics either diminished or vanished completely while they were concentrating on the music. IIRC one young boy had tics and rollerblading helped him , much like the music.

    3. I like that he gets serious when the syndrome kicks in and has to do his cross 😅. He goes from laughing to “bless me father” instantly.

    4. we have a colleague in our office that has tourrete syndrome and she makes car horn noises from time to time. She is the cutest human in our office. The only problem is that she can’t hide. Everybody knows where she is most of the time.
