How The Netherlands Hides Its Trash Underground To Keep Cities Spotless

Some say that toilet paper is still hanging off that underground dumpster to this very day.

    2. We have a similar system in France.

What I noticed in Amsterdam, though, is that people leave their trash bags right on the ground outside their front doors for city services to collect, without using individual bins.
And yet, there isn’t a single unpleasant smell in the streets.

    3. Not a big surprise if you live in Portugal.

Most of the cities have adapted this system and it works very well.

Why not use a mechanism that fixes the bin in place so you don’t have to wait for it to swing about to fit it in?

    5. Why are there three identical trash cans next to each other? I can see one is for glass or bottles of some sort, but the other three are the same.

Nah, I’d rather have many people with bad mood empty small bins every morning.
That way the the bins are quickly filled to the top and we can complain about people who litter the place.
      Hell yeah  🇩🇪

Two important things to notice here: people actually use them, and the city empties it before it’s overflowing. Makes a difference

Reminding me of that video where they have ones like this inside a mall and a kid hides in it, then his friends open it and he’s gone, yelling for help. Luckily had enough trash (that wasn’t sharp I guess) to catch him, but seems scary!

    9. Bit off-topic but I’m really getting tired of those “This is how we do X in the Netherlands!” videos that show something that is commonplace in much of Europe

    10. I love how clean it keeps things but there seems to be so many things that can go dangerously wrong with how they’ve executed the transfer procedure.

    11. Must be nice to live in a city warm enough year-round so you can do that kind of thing. Where I live (Canada), the brutal winters would screw this system up in a couple of heart-beats.

That doesn’t keep the Cities Spotless…. people actually caring and putting the trash in the bins keeps the Cities Spotless

You still need to get people to actually use the garbage cans though. That seems to be a tough ask around here.

We in America be like “oh wow, they live in the future.”

No man, they live in the present. We just live… in … check notes… America.

    15. Think of all the cool shit we could have if we spent our money on infrastructure instead of on tax cuts for the rich and golden ballrooms. One man’s opinion.
