Dust and grit build up between the case and phone. Tiny movements act like sandpaper and dull the contact surfaces. You could probably use some polishing compound to restore the fine finish if you wanted to.

A thin layer of plastic resin from the case transferred to the phone’s composite shell due to heat and moisture…is my guess.
