      Hashemi was considered the front runner at the time, a moderate between reformists and conservatives who sought to normalize relations with the West, court foreign investment, and improve work opportunities for women.

      Ultimately, Hashemi was beaten by the conservative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the run-off election.
