Context: As you all probably know at this point, in 1201, Pope Innocent III called for a 4th Crusade to recapture Jerusalem.

However the Crusaders were a bit in need of pay, so with help from the Venetians, they sacked the city of Zara in 1202, and later sacked Constantinople in 1204 after the deposition of Alexios III.

Venetians hijacking a Crusade and using a deposed prince to take over Zara and Constantinople. They then proceeded to sack Constantine’s city, butcher a bunch of people, melt a bunch of golden, silver and bronze statues and artifacts, steal a bunch of relics associated with Christ, get insanely rich off of it, justify it through the Trojan War, and then dominate the Mediterranean Sea for the next few centuries.

I feel like the Papacy had a love/haye repatiomship with the Crusades

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” was a very comon reaction by the Vatican during the eight crusades
