There was a time that a penny washer was just a penny 🙂

This is actually really common to do in the construction world. Good work.

Sure hope it’s not in a humid area, or you’re about to get a lesson about galvanic corrosion.

I decorated a leather punk jacket using those rivet in dog collar spikes and used pennies for washers so the spikes would stand up straight. I had a $10 Harbor Freight metal punch to punch the holes. I forget how many spikes I had in it but the thing weighed like 10 lbs. when I was done, it was ridiculous.
Unfortunately don’t have pictures.
Other punks I knew would use #5 or #6 finishing washers for the spikes, these were the more common kind that screw in place, they work really well and it’s much less labor intensive

so, i gotta ask
how much would a washer have been compared to the coin?

I do metal detecting as a hobby. We sometimes find “large cent” pennies (US) that were used for that same purpose back in the 1805s! Nothing is new under the sun.
