Pretty much all we know about Maya we know thanks to him and his academic work was really valuable. E.g. if not for it we wouldn’t be able to decipher Mayan writing system.
So paradoxically if you would somehow turn back time and kill him, you would make Mayan cultural inheritance poorer.

Listen, I don’t like that he burned all of those codices either. It would be great to have more information about Maya civilization from their point of view. But if I saw people trying to commit human sacrifices, I might go crazy and start burning stuff too.
