Of course he can

    1. Some history will exist even after Trump. Reagan now joins Ford, Dole, the Bush clan, the McCains, the Romneys, and I suppose every other postwar Republican leader as a RINO, not heeling to the “ideas” of the American MAGA (spelled fascist) Party.

    2. What fraud? What misrepresentation of the facts? The only liar and fraud here is Trump

    3. Presidential speeches are public domain. I’m sure he was told this by his lawyers, or he would have directed the FAA to pull the licenses of any station playing the ad.

Anyone who actually listened to, or read the Reagan speech would acknowledge that the Canadian ad was a true representation of Reagan’s views on tariffs.

    4. Canada isn’t paying the tariffs being imposed on our goods by Trump. Americans buying Canadian goods and importing them into the US is paying them. So Trump just increased what Americans are paying by 10%

    5. They don’t need to ‘seek or receive permission…”

Presidential speeches and addresses (and tweets even!) are public domain. Anyone can use them at any time for any reason.

    6. If he is upset about this, heaven help us if someone makes a commercial on what Reagan said about immigration.

    7. Pot meeting kettle implies that Canada *did* misuse the audio. First of all, it was a provincial (Ontario) ad, not a federal (Canadian) one. so… don, if you think that one province represents the entire country then I guess I should assume everything Gavin Newsom says is perfectly in line with all the other states too.

But that said, I think most Canadians do agree with Ontario’s logic and the only manipulation they did of the audio was to pare it down and make it flow in the context of the ad. They never changed the intention or meaning of Reagan’s words, just got rid of irrelevant info (He was specifically discussing tariffs on Japanese semiconductors)

But sure, donald, if you want the full context here is a snippet that Ontario selected key quotes from:

**You see, at first, when someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes, for a short while, it works — but only for a short time.** What eventually occurs is: first, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets. And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs. **High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition.** So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying. **Then the worst happens: markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs.**

(The bolded parts were used, the unbolded parts were not)

So donald, would you prefer we air the whole speech every commercial break? I’m not sure it’s the gotcha you’re looking for.

    8. If anyone knows how to “misrepresent” the truth it’s the Orange Moron and his band of cronies.
