The majority of the people in the USA go to special place at least once a week where they are taught to discard reason, to believe that kings are good, to embrace the idea that they (the parishioners) have no value as people, that the universe runs on magic, that racism and genocide are good (and it goes on that way). Guilt is used as the lever to get people to accept the words. This method of indoctrination has results. It makes people vulnerable, causing them to instantly believe anything said by a grifter with a bible in their hand. And bible grifters tend to love fascist style propaganda with it’s conspiracies and groups to despise.
As a result most of the population is trained from birth forward to have feeling about fascism and authoritarianism that are positive, because the structure and trappings of fascism are often very similar to the structure and trappings they were surrounded by at church & taught to revere.

Fox News propaganda convinced their viewers that democrats were literally demons. The far-right media kept insisting that the government needed to be wiped out and to “drain the swamp”.
Also, this was at a time when the future was rather uncertain because of the pandemic. Uncertainty causes people to become desperate and many were ready to just do something for the sake of making history.
