**Context:** After over a year besieged in Caizhou, the last stronghold of the Jin Dynasty, Emperor Aizong of Jin realized that the war with the Mongols was lost. On February 9th, 1234, Aizong finally gave up, abdicated his throne, and subsequently committed suicide. With no emperor, General Wanyan Chenglin assumed the throne and was hastily crowned Emperor Mo of Jin before attempting to drive off the Mongol siege. Unfortunately, the Mongols would later break through the city’s defenses the same day, putting an end to Emperor Mo’s rule just a few hours after it began.
