My airline is weighing every passenger upon check-in. SJU-EIS

    1. I flew them 14 years ago and they did the same thing. Then we had to line up and the pilot decided where everyone was going to sit

    2. Load balancing is a real and important thing, especially if they’re hauling a bunch of cargo too.

      Seaplanes even more so!

    3. it’s for weight and balance purposes, for smaller planes it’s critically important, every pound matters. For larger planes they can use an average weight per passenger.

    4. You do know you are about to board a very small plane right? 🙂

We just met family in Maine and my GF did not tell her parents their connection from Boston was a Cessna, It was pretty hilarious when the guy lead us out the door onto the runway to the plane, they were very confused.

I was a pilot for them for a couple of years. Yes you need to be weighed or in reality we just ask you for your weight and then put that in to make sure the center of gravity is good for the flight.

Unfortunately we would get some people who swear they are 160 or something like that and… are clearly not so we would have to do our best estimate. Please give your correct weight as that’s the difference between taking off and staying in the air and taking off and falling back to earth with the nose pointing straight up

Cape air flies 8 seater aircraft to underserved regions. On aircraft that small, knowing how much each passenger weighs and where they sit can literally be a matter of life or death

    7. This can happen in regular airlines with full size jets if they have a weight restriction. That’s something that can happen due to weather and/or other factors. I’ve been on flights where people were actually bumped due to weight restrictions. So while it’s more common with small planes, the bigger jets are sometimes affected. As an example, very warm weather can be a factor, the air is thinner and lift is more difficult so they need to lighten the plane.

    8. I flew cape air home on a Sunday morning after a football weekend last year and had to hurl in the barf bag lol. Good times.

I fly cape Air often. They always weigh the passengers and bags to figure out the weight distribution on the plane. They are just tiny planes and the bags are stored in the wings

    10. Now boarding group 1, first class.

      Boarding group 2, gold members.

      Boarding group 3, fatsos.

    11. For small aircraft this is normal. There have been crash disasters when the load (people) is not balanced properly. The equation tables to estimate weight are outdated. Only in the modern era have people gotten used to the idea of being offended by weighing passengers (the load)

Aaliyah and her crew would still be alive if the pilot had done this before the flight. Weight and balance is critical on smaller planes, if it’s overloaded or off balance the plane will crash.

Cape air flies smaller planes. Like Cessna 208s and what not. Weight and balance actually matters a ton
