    1. This makes no sense, both possible points you could be trying to convey are deeply wrong.

Matthew Perry: “The whole purpose of us getting the navy was to get trade flowing and you know, profit immensely from the Japanese economy. And y’know, they can’t refuse because of the implication”

Americans: “Oh, you had me going for the first part but the second part kinda threw me…”

MP: “Well dude, think about it y’know Japan is all alone, they’re approached by the Navy of a nation they barely know and Japan looks around itself and what does it see? Nothing but open ocean “Ahh, nowhere for me to retreat, what am I going to do say no?”

Americans: ” okay that- that seems really dark though”

MP: “Nah, no it’s not dark… You’re misunderstanding me bro”

      Americans “I think I am :)”

MP: “yeah you are, because if Japan said no the answer would obviously be no…but Japan will never say ‘no’ because of the implication”

Americans: “…. Now you’ve said that world a couple times… What implication?”

MP: “The implication that things might go wrong if Japan refuses to trade with me- Not that things are going to go wrong for them, but they’re thinking it will”

Americans: ” But it sounds like they don’t want to trade with you…”

MP: “why aren’t you understanding this?! Japan doesn’t know if they want to trade with me, that’s not the issue”

Americans: “are you going to invade these people?”

MP: “I’m not going to invade these people! why would I ever invade these people? I feel like you’re not getting this at all!’
