All the ducks lined up at the pond as if they’re about to race

    1. The organization is impressive—clearly some serious pre-race focus going on here.

    2. They are! This is a phenomenon known as Ductus Duflictus, studied as early as ancient Greek civilization.

Its a defense mechanism against predators. Predators will see many targets arranged neatly but be indecisive about which to attack because of this. This baits the predator to engage but with indecision, and then the ducks will literally “race” to see who can get away slowest and still live, leaving the most compromised in their flock to go full speed.

This strategy is commonly considered to be the origin of the phrase “get your ducks in a row” as to indicate you need to prepare for an important event.

      Nature is fascinating!
