About 50 million years ago, India slammed into Asia and boofed the seafloor into the sky. Everest’s an ancient beach.

Why is the image from the side? Satellites are normally so high up all their images are from directly overhead.

Man, this photo really calls home just how *thin* the habitable atmosphere is. Like you can see the entire sky, but just appreciating the haze in the lower valleys, it strikes home how only the very bottom sliver can support life. Woah.

You hear astronauts talk about the [overview effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overview_effect); how their entire perspective of Earth changes once viewed from above – emphasising just how fragile and precious the biosphere is, and how all other petty sociopolitical squabbles seem irrelevantly small compared to the need to preserve and maintain our life support system. I’m getting that feeling just looking at this.
